Engine 17 was a very careless tank engine. He was very lazy and knew Simon, Fred, Duchess of Gloucester and Australia while he was alive. He was the shunter at Euston station, however he believed that he deserved better. He considered himself unique, or as he put it "One of a kind!" Engine 17 was very carless, he would constantly try to run off without his driver and fireman! They'd always manage to get him retrieve him before he reached the mainline, except once. One day he jolted his driver and fireman off of his footplate and ran into the path of the post train. Worst still he was laughing when it happened. But he wasn't laughing when he saw what was coming as the post train crashed into him, killing him. Engine 17 was beyond repair and was scrapped at Crewe Works. Engine 17 was quickly forgotten about. Even Simon, who was built the same time as Engine 17 didn't ask about him when he first came to the yards and did all of the work Engine 17 once did. Later, Engine 17 returns as a ghost and still haunts British Railways, mainly the engines of Euston. He gave Terry, Horwich, Ivatt and Jimmy quite a fright after they encountered him. Later, Fred confronted Engine 17 with the intentions of getting him to leave, however this fails when Jimmy sees Engine 17 outside of the sheds at the end of the episode.
